Pitch Win: “Achtung!” and the German Red Cross (DRK) Reimagine Blood Donation

Achtung! Alive is the new lead creative agency for the campaign communications of the German Red Cross (DRK) Blood Donation Services in Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, and Northeast Germany. In a multi-stage pitch, we prevailed with a social-first approach that not only explains blood donation but also frames it in a way that makes it tangible in everyday life and inspires action.

The campaign kicks off with the joint initiative: “Saving lives has style.” The focus is on how to reach young adults and first-time donors in particular without being overly dramatic or preachy. Instead of grand appeals, we emphasize connection, guidance, and a clear path from the initial impulse to booking an appointment.

What made the difference in the pitch was less a single motif than the overall logic: strategy, creation, and implementation interlock in such a way that social media isn’t just “a channel,” but the starting point of an engagement process that is consistently designed to lead all the way to booking an appointment. Wolfgang Rüstig, Managing Director of DRK Blood Donation Services Baden-Württemberg – Hesse and Northeast, describes the shared core concept as follows: “In a stimulating exchange with Achtung! Alive during the campaign development phase, we captured the core idea of the life-saving topic of blood donation in a modern, peer-to-peer approach to the target audience: Altruistic commitment clearly has style.”

Especially with younger target audiences, many decisions are made based on specific situations: Do I have time? What exactly happens there? Is it uncomfortable? This is exactly where our content development comes in. We present blood donation in a way that reduces uncertainty and makes the whole process seem doable—visually, through rhythm, sound, and real-life situations—without losing sight of the seriousness of the topic. The messaging is supported by Wincent Weiss and Lea Wagner, who bring additional reach and credibility to the campaign.

Achtung! Alive’s mandate is end-to-end: from campaign and communication strategy through creation, content production, and the campaign website to internal communication as well as joint PR and media relations. Martin Oesterer, Head of Donor Relationship Management at the DRK Blood Donation Service for Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, and Northeast Germany, says: “We are very pleased to have Achtung! Alive as our lead agency, which uses creativity and insight to highlight the importance of this issue in a way that resonates with our target audience.”

The campaign is being rolled out on platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok (all @meineblutspende). The central hub is www.lebenrettenhatstyle.de, where the videos are compiled, information is presented, and appointments can be booked directly online. Tim Voigt, Managing Director of Achtung! Alive: “If we want to reach new donors, we have to address them where decisions are made: in everyday life. This requires clarity, relatability, and an approach that doesn’t come across as preachy.”

And this isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a necessity: In Germany, around 15,000 blood donations are needed every day—for surgeries, after accidents, or to treat sick people. Blood cannot be produced artificially and has a limited shelf life. The supply therefore depends on the commitment of donors.
